Niseko Hirafu Resort

is located on Hokkaido, the North island of Japan. It is about 60 km west of Sapporo, the islands main city and location of the international airport.

Winter

The powder snow of the Niseko region is legendary with up to 600 inches or 15 meters of snowfall each season. This compares to about 500 inches of snow that are recorded in some of the snowiest ski resorts in North America or Europe. The season extends from late November until early May and fresh powder snow falls on an almost daily basis arriving on the cold frontal systems that flow down from Siberia Plains, picking up moisture as they come down.

This makes Niseko Hirafu a powder Mecca.

The Grand Hirafu area combines three resorts with 61 runs, 38 lifts and over 47 kilometers of groomed runs to suit all levels. Depending on the ticket you purchase, you can access a total of 5 areas, from “La Ponte”, Mt Annupuri in the south extending around to the Hanazono bowls in the North. The lifts are open from 8.30 am until 9.00pm and this is arguably the largest night lit area in the world. Night skiing is an amazing experience not to be missed!

Kinoko is a friendly skier focused pension. Your hosts are both qualified Ski Instructors and David is also a Backcountry Guide. For those looking for a challenge and the ultimate experience the endless backcountry powder fields await.

Spring/summer

In Spring the place comes alive. Once the snow begins to melt the trees begin to get their leaves. As soon as any ground loses its snow the jungle starts to grow. Within a month or 2 of the snow disappearing in the valleys the forest is a lush green with undergrowth already over a meter high. This transformation is nothing short of spectacular.

The weather warms quickly and from May till the end of September the temperature is consistently in the mid to high 20s.

The locals take great advantage of this; tramping over the mountains, playing golf and park golf, cycling (both mountain and road), rafting, canoeing, paragliding, gardening, etc...

The tulips are the first of many waves of vibrantly coloured flower displays. The locals take great pride in their flower gardens and carefully select a diverse range of plants to ensure that there is always something in flower the whole of spring and summer.
